Water Quality and Supply Issues Monthly Update-JAN 2023
Happy New Year from CICWQ.
What a deluge of rain we have had throughout California since we last wrote to you in December. We hope everyone is OK and that your families and friends’ homes and properties stayed safe during the wettest period on record we’ve had in California in many years.
As we emerge in the new year and clean up and pick up the pieces, take a look at the latest California water storage project records for mid-January 2023. Water supply and storage in California are certainly looking up, and compared to the recent past, we are in good shape to return to more normal conditions. But we seem to be in persistent drought in California, so diligence in using conservation measures is still needed, along with developing new runoff capture and storage projects and facilities. You will be reading more about major new infrastructure projects supported by CICWQ and member companies in the coming months.
Looking back and ahead, we prepared a summary Year-in-Review for 2022, which highlights the key advocacy issues we worked on and some of the major accomplishments. Most notable is the adoption and renewal of the Construction General Permit for Stormwater by the State Water Resources Control Board, of which CICWQ and its technical and legal advocacy team achieved major changes which protect the industry from non-compliance fines and penalties.
Speaking of the Construction General Permit for stormwater and its recent renewal, in the months ahead, look for more information and opportunities for training on the Construction General Permit for stormwater and key new changes and updates from the current permit. If you manage construction site stormwater or work with people in or outside your organization who develop and implement Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans, known as QSDs and QSPs, you’ll want to regularly check our CICWQ news and events page.
WATER ISSUES WORTH YOUR TIME IN JANUARY
1) California Major Water Supply Reservoir Storage Update
The California Department of Water Resources tracks a host of different hydrological indicators on its user friendly website. With atmospheric rivers aimed at California over the past month, major water supply reservoirs we depend on are at or getting closer to historical "normal" levels. See the latest statewide hydrologic update and check out reservoir conditions as of Monday, January 16.
2) CICWQ 2022 Advocacy -- Year in Review
CICWQ worked throughout 2022 to protect the interests of the construction industry working in California. Read a summary of key issues, including links to additional information on the topics covered.
